Kristaps Porzingis willing to be Celtics’ defensive catalyst

Kristaps Porzingis is ready for a new role with the Boston Celtics. After being acquired in a three-team trade this offseason, the Latvian big man is eager to prove himself as a defensive catalyst for his new team.

Porzingis knows he is expected to help the team fill the void left by Marcus Smart, who was traded to the Memphis Grizzlies in the same deal. Smart is known for his tenacious defense and ability to disrupt opposing offenses.

In an interview with Boston.com, Porzingis said, “Every steal, every cap, every pass I can make for this team, from lifting my hands to passing the ball, I’m going to do it and I’m going to give it my all 100 percent.” [Boston coach] Joe [Mazzulla] gave me the green light on defense. [If I see an opportunity to pressure them on defense, I’m going to do it.

That’s what Joe and the coaching staff expects from me,” Porzingis continued.

Porzingis has the potential to be a disruptive force on the defensive end. He is a big, athletic player with great instincts. He’s also an excellent capper. Last season with the Washington Wizards, he contributed 1.5 caps per game.

In addition to his defensive potential, Porzingis is a skilled offensive player. He is an all-around scorer who can score at all three levels of the court. He is also an excellent rebounder and passer.

If Porzingis is able to fulfill his potential as an offensive and defensive player, he will be a great asset to the Celtics. He could help the Celtics become one of the most threatening teams in the East.
